CHARACTER CASTING FOR ASCENSION OF THE WHYTE
by Karen Wrighton

ROSE: Elle Fanning
16 Year old Mary Elle Fanning is an American actress. Younger sister of actress Dakota Fanning she is mainly known for her starring roles in Phoebe in Wonderland, Somewhere, We Bought a Zoo, and as Aurora in 2014's Maleficent

I think that with a little tweaking with the hair colour she would make an ideal Rose she has just the right look, a perfect balance of vulnerability, stubbornness and strength in her face. She is pretty much exactly how I had pictured Rose to look.

ASH: Jake T. Austin
19 year old Jake T. Austin is best known for his role as Max Russo, the youngest of three wizards on the Disney Channel original series Wizards of Waverly Place. More recently he played Huckleberry Finn in the 2013 film Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Though he may be a little old for the part (maybe not in Hollywood terms though) I think that he is an ideal Ash as along with the perfect physique, he is also known for his wicked sense of humour!

AURIEL: Sophie Nélisse
Marie-Sophie Nélisse is a 14 year old Canadian teen actress. She is known for her Genie Award–winning performance in Monsieur Lazhar and for her starring role in The Book Thief, which is the film version of one of my favourite books and I think she was brilliant in it. It also has a nice symmetry to it because of course, Auriel is strongly associated with books being a Memorix.

I think that her face portrays the intelligent, loyal and highly moral qualities that epitomise Auriel's Character.

LEE: Yeo Jin-goo
Yeo Jin-goo is a 16 year old South Korean actor who began his career as a child, notably in the film Sad Movie moving to the television dramas Giant, Moon Embracing the Sun, and then more recently in the film Missing You.

His cool looks are so very Lee, and I think that he could pull off the very difficult job of making Lee, who is on the face of it, such an unlikeable character, likeable. Lee is much more than he shows himself to be to others and it would take a creative actor to get this across to the audience.

Obviously Yeo would need a serious hair colour makeover (Red) or a very good hairpiece to complete his transformation into the young Blood Alchemist and he would have to be comfortable with carrying a Loris around on his shoulder most of the time too!

ARJAN: Devon Gearhart
Devon Gearhart is a 19 year old American teen actor best known for his roles in films such as Funny Games and the brilliant film Changeling with Angelina Jolie. His friendly, altruistic and likeable looks and personality make him an ideal Arjan.

LORD DUX: Patrick Stewart
Sir Patrick Stewart OBE is an English film, television, and stage actor, who needs no introduction and who's on screen presence and resonant voice make him ideal for the role of the eminently respected wise and powerful Lord Dux.

LORD THEODORE GOLDIN: Ben Kingsley
Sir Ben Kingsley who has played many wise, deep and mysterious characters in his long career including the enchanting character of Georges Méliès / Papa Georges in Marting Scorsese's wonderful film Hugo which perfectly fits him for the part of the wise and mystical Lord Goldin.

LORD DE LILLE: Johnny Depp
Lord De Lille is a flamboyant and charismatic character, a great Alchemist, a wonderful teacher and one of my favourite characters. I can think of no one better to play him than one of my favourite actors; the wonderfully charming and multi talented Johnny Depp.

LORD KA: Jet Li
A well known Chinese film actor, film producer, martial artist, and wushu champion and who would make an all round brilliantly evil villain that you would want to avoid like the plague.... which makes him my number one choice to play Lord Ka. To paraphrase one of his lines from Lethal Weapon 4.... "In Hydrargyrum you would already be dead!"

EL-ON-AH: Jamie Chung
A vastly experienced actress with a large number of films and TV series under her belt including The Hangover Part II the recurring role of Mulan in the ABC fantasy television series Once Upon a Time and the NBC drama series Believe. She has one of those enigmatic faces that makes it difficult to decide.... is she good or is she BAD?... Which is exactly what you need to play the frustratingly ambivalent character of El-on-ah.

RO-EH-NA: Kristin Kreuk
Kristin Laura Kreuk is a Canadian actress, known for her roles as Lana Lang in the Superman-inspired television series Smallville and films Street Fighter and Snow White. She will need lots of makeup for this role as she is very beautiful and of course, Ro-eh-na is terribly disfigured, however I think that she is the ideal choice for this revenge driven and highly spirited character.

THE ELDER WITCH: Vanessa Redgrave
Vanessa Redgrave, CBE. an English actress of stage, screen and television, and political activist who needs little introduction. My choice for the Elder Witch because it takes a great actress to add the necessary amount of weight to this important role.

So that is about it.... of course there are many, many more characters to cast and maybe you have your own suggestions for the others. I have enjoyed this self indulgent romp from the world of novel writing into the realm of the motion picture casting director.

I wonder, if my book ever does make it onto the big screen, will they take any of my suggestions seriously? If they do it will be one hell of a movie!

Wait a minute though I can't go without mentioning one of the most important characters and would be cast members....

Sloley the Pharmacon Loris
